Hats Off to M.E.S.A.

Hats Off to M.E.S.A.

In the midst of all of the life-saving medical equipment shipped in containers by District 6600’s organization, Medical Equipment Supplies Abroad (M.E.S.A.), a simple ball cap can seem like a relatively unimportant after thought. But shipment after shipment, these hats show they are so much more than a discarded hat.

The high-quality hats (some retail up to $18) are provided to M.E.S.A. by Pukka Inc., a custom hat and apparel company in Findlay, Ohio and owned by a Findlay Rotarian, Kent Rogers. Pukka gives M.E.S.A. hats that are unable to be sold by the company for a variety of reasons. The hats may be branded with a company logo and often end up in the company’s basement.

M.E.S.A. gives the Pukka hats to children in the area where the equipment containers land. Sometimes the hats are even offered as payment to individuals for helping to unload the containers. M.E.S.A. Operations Director Gary Davis shares, “I can only send a few hundred at a time because if I send too many the black market gets ahold of them and sells them for about $10 each, a huge amount of money in these areas.”

Whenever the hats are delivered, M.E.S.A. always receives pictures back of happy individuals wearing the hats. In turn, MESA shares those pictures with the people at Pukka who continue provide hats as they know they will end up reaching the most disadvantaged in the world.

The hats are an great example of taking items that are nearly worthless to one organization and making them invaluable to another. Hats off to Pukka and M.E.S.A. for this excellent partnership!

Pictured below are hats from a recent shipment to Tanzania. Tanzania is located on the southeastern side of Africa. Pukka hats were delivered to five different areas in the country.

New District Essay Contest for Seventh and Eighth Graders

imageIt’s back to school time and we have a new opportunity to promote Rotary’s Four Way Test with every seventh and eighth grader in District 6600.

District 6600 is pleased to announce the creation of the Four Way Test Essay Contest. This contest is targeted specifically for seventh and eighth grade students and is designed to complement the existing Four Way Test Speech Contest for high school students. Students will write an essay explaining what the Four Way Test means to them in 1,500 words or less. Those essays will be judged by local Rotary clubs to identify a winner who will compete at the District level. The overall District winner will be recognized at the District Conference in May at Sawmill Creek.

Esther Baldridge of the Lima Rotary Club is chairing the Essay contest for the District and shares, “This is a great new project for clubs to offer our seventh and eighth graders. Participating students will have an opportunity for a cash prize and the chance to interact with a local Rotary club. The Four Way Test is an integral part of Rotary and this is the perfect way to introduce those ideals into the lives of youth in our district.”

If your club is interested in participating in this year’s essay contest please:

  • Download Essay Contest information and share with club members.
  • Identify a chair for the project within your club.
  • Talk to schools now! Essays are due in February 2017 but now is the time to identify a partner teacher for the project.

All clubs are encouraged to participate in this youth focused project. If you have any questions about the contest or would like additional information, please contact Esther Baldridge.

Centennial Red and White Wine Now Available

Rotary TRF100In celebration of 100 years of doing good through The Rotary Foundation, District 6600 has commissioned Centennial Red and White Wine from Firelands Winery in Sandusky, Ohio. Please note these words from District 6600 Governor, Do Nguyen:

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

It is difficult to believe but we are already on our third production of the 100 Year Celebration Rotary Red Table Wine.

Thanks to the generosity of Rotarians in all of Ohio and especially our own District 6600, we have already received contributions enough to donate $12,000 to the Rotary Foundation.  As with our first two productions, the run is limited in number and is on a first donation, first confirm basis. As a District 6600 Rotarian you can order a case or more to use for special gifts, occasions, and even for the Holidays. Cases of wine will be delivered in September.

In addition, a new 100 Year Celebration White Table Wine is also being produced for a September delivery. We have had many Rotarians ask about white wine and we’ve listened.

YOUR contribution and request needs to be received as soon as possible as a portion of this production is also set to go to the Legacy Zone Institute in Cleveland in late in September. As important, there may not be another wine production run offered prior to the end of this year.

Please join fellow Rotarians by contributing $288 and you will receive a case (12 bottles) of either the 100 Year Rotary Celebration Red or White Table Wine with commemorative label. Delivery is included in the price for District 6600 Rotarians. Time is truly limited to take advantage of this opportunity.

Thank you, in advance, for your continued enthusiasm for our Rotary Foundation’s Centennial Year. Know that a minimum $120 donation will be made for each $288 contribution received by the District.

Yours in Rotary,

Do Nguyen District Governor 6600
